Anurag Kashyap's Bold Statements on T-Series
Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has expressed his discontent with the renowned music label T-Series, accusing them of not appreciating quality music. In a conversation with The Juggernaut, he disclosed that he received minimal compensation for the music from several of his successful films, despite their acclaim and dedicated fanbase.
Kashyap took a jab at Bhushan Kumar, the Managing Director of T-Series, stating, “If Bhushan Kumar isn’t purchasing it, then it must be good music. If T-Series isn’t interested, it’s likely great music.” He further asserted, “T-Series doesn’t pay fair prices for good music.”
He elaborated on his experiences, mentioning that he was underpaid for the music of his iconic films like Gangs of Wasseypur and DevD. Kashyap remarked, “They offered very little for the music of DevD, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Gulaal, yet profited immensely from those soundtracks. Their payments are primarily for the stars involved, not for the music quality. They paid nothing for the track from DevD, even though it is considered a cult classic.”
He noted that the highest payment he received was for the film Bombay Velvet, which did not perform well musically for T-Series, yet they compensated him generously. Kashyap criticized their understanding of good music, stating that they tend to promote only a specific genre.
In the same interview, Kashyap, known for his candid critiques of the Hindi film industry, shared that he has relocated from Mumbai and is content with his new lifestyle. He mentioned, “I avoid people who are fixated on numbers. I have a different social circle now, and I’m back to my roots, focusing on my books.”
On the professional front, Anurag Kashyap is set to direct the upcoming film Nishaanchi. Previously, he helmed Kennedy, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 and is still awaiting its release in India, despite receiving positive feedback at various film festivals.
